A song can come from a concept, lyric, riff of full blown, completed demo. Whatever the form of the initial inspiration is, DWB will always rehearse and jam on something until everyone gets comfy with it and it slowly melts into this beautiful cosmic conglomerate that sounds like no one but DWB. The song we are featuring this week is "We ‘Bout to Do Dis Thang" and we thought we’d give U a little insight into what we were thinking as we wrote it.

We were jamming in Robby’s basement and Cozmo just started on this riff in Aminor. It was BAD from the funky downbeat. I remember I had just bought this really cheap megaphone from Radio Shack and I kept on saying "We Bout To Do Dis Thang" over and over again. Ok, maybe there needs to be a little background story as to why I would even say something like that in the 1st place, so here goes.

We had just gotten back from playing a gig in Cincinatti called "Funkdown for Food" It was kind of a showcase and community benefit concert all wrapped up into one event. The evenings host was none other than funk legend Bootsy Collins. We were all star struck by Bootsy and his entourage. It wasn’t like this was some MTV awards show or anything but Bootsy showed up in his FULL funky garb. His leopard print leather outfit complete with cowboy hat and trademark star shaped glasses matched the colors of the Cincinatti Bengals football team. He looked like the head some interplanetary biker gang, a funky biker gang.

DWB played an adrenalin filled show that nite and Bootsy seemed to dig it. He sent his protégé "Freekbass" to get up and jam with us on a Sly and the Family Stone medley. As the evenings festivities came to a close there I was face to face with one of my funk heros. Bootsy was working with an independent label/promoter who had said they wanted to sign us and have Bootsy produce us. I was so pumped! Dishwater Blonde produced by Bootsy Collins, I had stars in my eyes. I said my goodbyes to Bootsy and we exchanged numbers and his last words to me were "Hey Davis, We ‘Bout to Do Dis Thang"...I was like woah(best Joey voice)

Ok, so back to my story. We left Cincy and were creatively inspired. We were about to hit the big time, so we thought. I began to dream of a DWB album that featured Bootsy Collins on a track. Well, long story short it never happened, or at least hasn’t happened yet BUT it lit a creative spark. While we were putting together "One Tribe" and rehearsing tunes for what was soon to be DWB’s 3rd CD we stumbled upon this riff that Cozmo came up with that just sound like an album intro. As we planned for the album my intention was to have Bootsy saying "We ‘Bout to do Dis Thang" with his cartoonishly funky voice. So as U listen to that track U might here me slightly imitating Bootsy as we weren’t able to get him in the studio.

The lyrics were written to be like the forward of a book. They were supposed to portray an intentionality in our music, a mission statement of sorts. I wanted to let the audience know that we weren’t just playing cool riffs with meaningless words, no, we wanted the lyrics to be loaded with good stuff, encouraging stuff that helped make lives better. With the addition of TurntablWrecka’s samples I think we achieved something really cool. Even if Bootsy didn’t produce it:)

What up people & If. U have been following us for even a short while u will know that we are blessed to have alot of musicians pass thru the DWB family. Once u join, it's like a musical mafia, U can never leave, U may not play gigs but U are still a member. This is the case with our good friend Eddie Diamond, a.k.a "Chocolate Sprinkles". Eddie Diamond is a stand alone rockstar name if I've ever heard one:) In fact we seriously considered at one point changing our name to "Eddie Diamond and the Caucasian Persuasaion"! Robby met Eddie at Kroger of all places where Eddie worked as a butcher. A mutual friend introduced Eddie and Robby in line at the bank. As she knew we were always looking for new musicians, she said 2 Robby, "Eddie plays keys". Robby inquired of Eddie, "how long u been playing?" Eddie replied nonchalantly "about 30 years". Wow, 30 years, we've barely been alive that long! Robby said he "just knew he would be good". At the time, many of Eddies current gigs were at his church but as it turns out he'd had a lifetime of experience playin' around. It was the coolest thing, when Eddie came over to jam it was like we'd been life long friends with a shared record collection. From The Ohio Players to Sly and the family Stone Eddie could play it. He brought his 1982 yamaha keyboard over a ripped it to pieces! He did one of the most blistering versions of "Flashlight" by Parliament that I've heard to this day. Bernie Worrell would be proud. The thing I can recall most about Eddie was his ability to play ANY Hall and Oates song u could think of. He had a sound on his keyboard that was identical to the ones they'd used in the 80's. Eddie was and is always as much fun away from the keyboards as he is on them. He's always laughing and joking with a little laugh we still mimic to this day. It sounds like a cross of Enis from Duke of Hazard and a pig snort! We gave Eddie the nickname "Chocolate Sprinkles" because he always added flavor to our songs. There was always a huge difference when Eddie chimed in on DWB jams. If u listen back to our first self titled record Eddie can be heard confidently layin' down the funk on "Beautiful People" with a little clavinet sound from his keyboard run thru a crybaby wah pedal. It's still one of the best tones we've ever gotten from any keyboard to this day! U still might catch Eddie with us one day soon! When u do, be sure to call him "Chocolate Sprinkles" and wait for the laugh.

Spotlight on:Cozmo "The Fire"

Since May 9 was Cozmos birthday I thought I'd take a minute and just write a little history on how Coz and DWB got hooked up. Almost 10 years ago I was playing a gig with a band called "Gravy", it was the remnants of several defunct bands from Knoxville. It was a pretty rough time in my life and I was probably not in the best condition. Coz says we met that night, I honestly can't remember. He was friends with the drummer from "Gravy", JP. He had not acutally started playing guitar yet, he said back then everyone thought he could play but he didn't really know how, can u even imagine? Fast forward a few years and I'm watching "The Spades" band open up for Arrested Development in 2003 or '04. Coz is up there rockin' it out and seemed to be a bit nervous. I couldn't quite figure out at the time if he was white or black or what. It didn't really matter, but me being a guitar player, I just wondered who this dude with an Afro and headband was, wearing it out! He played with authority especially considering he'd only played a couple of years at that point. He was among seasoned musicians and didn't seem at all out of place. One evening in the same year DWB was playing at The Downtown Grill and Brewery in downtown Knoxville. It was sonic chaos, 12 people crammed in the corner of this restaraunt playing at ear damaging volume and as I looked out over the crowd I see Cozmo right in front of us groovin' and head bobbin' to the funk. I don't remember what song it was because I was so distracted by a guy in velvet pants grinding on the stairwell! Anywayz, I remember thinking to myself, u should ask this guy to sit in.(Coz, not velvet pants) So mid-song I called CoZ to come down and he seemed a bit surprised when I took my strat off and gave it to him. Nevertheless he jumped right in and started killing it. I honestly didn't want to take the guitar back when he as finished. He had "the fire"! We asked him to come out and practice and later join DWB, He had something we lacked at the time too, a youthful, infectious optimism. Later that year we went on to open up for Victor Wooten and even play Bonnaroo. Cozmo came in and added a much needed element for DWB, he had "The Fire". The rest is history in the making. CoZ has grown as a person and musician over the past few years and he has never lost his fire! Coz now leads his own band when he's not hittin' the stage with DWB or The Dirty Guvs or any number of local artists! He is also one of Robert Randolphs "go to" guys when he does Knoxville concerts. Anywayz, Happy Birthday Coz, DWB loves ya and we are honored to have U in the band! Keep bringing "The Fire" wherever U go.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

DWB hit the stage this past weekend in Maryville, Tn. at an awesome venue known to locals as "The Shed". From it's name you might be led tothink that it's a hole in the wall club/ bar with a dirt floor and an old Peavey PA system. "the Shed" is anything but that. It's probably one of my favorite venues to play. It's a covered outdoor venue with top notch production! Mark and the crew do an amazing job. It's a difficult feat to overpower the roar of 15 Harley Motorcycles reving their engines but they do it well! It was kinda, well really, rainy all day on Saturday but we had a faithful crew of DWB fans and new faces that made the journey to Maryville. Some fans driving in from as far as Atlanta! (much love 2 them). Thanks to them, I learned a new dance called "the stanky leg" which I did attempt later in the evening! This was also an interesting gig cuz it was 1 of only 2 gigs in our 6+ years that bassist Robby Mathis couldn't make it! But Tyler "Big Noise" Boldin stepped in and learned the ENTIRE DWB repetior in 1 week, well at least 16 songs:) Big Noise did an amazing job! We were also joined by long time friend and saxaphonist Jason Thompson, whom if known since the Gran Torino days. Jason stepped in and played like he'd played the songs his whole life! Look for more appearences from Jason in the near future. Out friends from Jescoe warmed everyone up with a blend of raw Southern Rock that held everyones attention. DWB hit the stage around 9. The stage shrouded in fog, the applause roared, the 1st notes of "we bout 2 do dis thang" hit with a funky fury and to quote the lady to the right as she threw her hands up "I can't listen to this sh$*, Im outta here!" Oh well, different strokes for different folks, I guess:)

Nashville was Diggin' Tha Funk

During what was supposed to be a "break/hiatus" for Dishwater Blonde we got a call from our friends The Fundamental Elements of St. Louis asking us if we’d be interested in doing a Nashville date. It was at 12th and Porter which is a really cool venue, not to mention we rarely get to Nashville but THE big selling point is that it was with FE, so we had to take it. These guys are like brothers to us, we have so much fun every time we play with them. For this particular gig DWB was down one crucial member, Cozmo Holloway who was recording an album with Knoxville’s best band "The Dirty Guv’nahs". So we debated but decided it was too good an opportunity to let pass. When we walked into 12th and Porter we quickly noticed the amazing sound system and lighting rig. It was something of festival proportions but in a fairly small room. One of the great things about playing w/ FE is that we pretty much share ALL the backline gear so there is minimal setup and changeover time. For our set DWB cranked out a mostly original set with a couple of throwback covers including the Isley Brother/Jackson 5 version of "It’s Yo Thang" complete with the "Doin’ that Butt" tease from E.U. that had out friends from Nashville/Murfreesboro and Columbia shakin’ dem big ole butts! DWB closed out the set with a rocking version of "The Lifting" with special guest Luke Dejaynes on lead guitar. Luke, FE’s drummer, surprised the crowd with his incendiary guitar work and helped end DWB’s set with an exclaimation point. FE took the stage right after 10 and began what would turn out to be a funk marathon lasting almost 2 hours. FE’s set had the crowd dancin’ from the beginning of "Don’t Say" all the way thru the grand finale that included both FE and DWB rockin’ out funk classics from Sly and The Family Stone, George Clinton and P-Funk as well as Stevie Wonder. It was an incredible evening of music that most certainly brought perma-grins to all of 12th and Porter. Travel back home was a bit scary as we got word that I-40 was becoming very dangerous b/c of icy conditions. What normally would’ve been a 3 hour trip ended up taking about 5 hours but everyone made it safely. A road weary DWB then went onto to perform at Knoxlife Church in Knoxville’s Old City at 10 am...on ZERO sleep. It was an awesome weekend of music capped off by Davis getting to share his testimony and brag on where God has brought him from. So is DWB on a break, a hiatus? Not really, it’s just kinda slow right now but be looking for more dates with FE in the near future! We’re concentrating on writing for album #4, yep, that’s right, look for more grooves in ‘09 from DWB.

2008 In Review

As we look back over 2008 for DWB it was a hard year but a very fruitful one. We kicked the New Year off by releasing an incredible new album called "One Tribe" and followed up quickly with a DVD that captured the CD release party(DWB Live NYE 2008). Our friends from Streamline Pictures then helped us film "Dishwater Blonde Unplugged at World Grotto" which we just released. It was a whirlwind of editing and cutting and splicing and mixing and remixing. We spent many hours in Nightsong Studios mixing the audio and many more hours with Nick and Joey at Streamline editing the video, all within the 1st half of the hear. The shows didn’t slow down, life and music didn’t stop as we marched forward, sometime very weary but always feeling blessed to be able to do this. What an amazing accomplishment that God allowed us to do. We released a CD and 2 DVD’s in less than a year, WOW! Hopefully we can sell a million of them now. There have been so many blessings we don’t even know where to begin but in the face of an uncertain economy Dishwater Blonde was blessed in ways that didn’t make sense to most folks. Lots of shows, lots of music, lots of good memories. During the year a couple of things to note are the side projects that have popped up. The New Power Trio was formed with Robby, Davis and Big Noise and then Cozmo’s new side project was formed and is really picking up momentum, "Cruise Control". Davis is working on a new project with Jesse Jones and should be out sometime maybe late spring. All this to say it has been a very good year and we still LOVE playing music as DWB and will continue on in 2009. Some of the major highlights of the year for DWB include the recent trip to St. Louis with our friends The Fundamental Elements. We had an incredible time laughing and rocking out with a bunch of really good folks who made us remember WHY we do this! We will do it again in ‘09. Robby got married this year, WOW! Davis stepped out in faith and has begun doing full time ministry this year. Cozmo got 2 play with Robert Randolph 2 different times this year! Diva got a new job and Gerald got a new custom drumkit from Medicine Man drums who now endorse GW. Every single time we played Barley’s in our hometown this year, we played to a packed house, what an awesome year. We will close out this year by playing the Peach Drop in Atlanta and we’re excited because Atlanta is like our 2nd home. 2008 was a Blessed year and we look forward to what God is gonna do in 2009. Hold on, I think it’s gonna be a wild ride!

Pork Chops, Strawberry Milk and Ling Xiu

Pork Chops and Strawberry Milk and Soul Repair

Coz and Rob covered most of the highlights in their blogs but I thought I would cover a couple of things that made the weekend stand out for me. Angie(my wife)shared a mandarin phrase with me at the beginning of last week that was particularly relevant to the whole experience we had last week with FE. "Ling Xiu"(pronounced leeengSHE-oo) which tranlates as "Soul Repair", was a phrase that perfectly describes this experience for me. The weeks preceeding this one were particularly full of chaos, hectic scheduling and unfulfilling musical moments. These were no doubt a cumulative attackof the enemy meant to affect our outlooks and attitudes. I have to confess, to some degree He was successful. Nevertheless God makes all things work 2gther for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. This weekend was one that reminded me that what we are doing is purposeful, meaningful and just freakin' FUN!From the time we left until the time we got back we laughed basically non-stop. The comradery between FE and DWB was supernatural. We talked about some of the things going on in our families, in our lives, in our music and helped build each other up. We shared all our gear, all our clothes and most of all laughs. A cheerful heart is medicinefor the soul..SOUL REPAIR! FE's hospitality went beyond anything we could ever have imagined. They made sure we had a place to sleep and something to eat everywhere wewent. We never went without anything that we needed. It turns out both FE and DWBwere in kind of spiritual and musical desert so to speak and this was a divine appointment meant to help us both hold on to hope! The highlights for me included Diva's never ending bowl of fried pork chops and the FE post-gig ritual of aquiring and drinking the state's prize winning strawberry milk. I haven't had strawberry milk since Iwas a kid. Scratch Track jumped up and did a Hip Hop version of "Man of Constant Sorrow" w/ FE in Burlington that was off the chain! Also JR's set was phenomenal in St. Louis which included a particularly soulful version of John Mayer's "Gravity" If u haven't seen JR or Scratch Track those are acts U need 2 check 'em out too. Next time we do a set of dates 2gther be sure and don't miss it cuz we 'gon drop the joy bomb wherever we go! It was a weekend of of Ling Xiu for me, fo sho!
2 verses come to mind as I close.

He who is a friend is always a friend, and a brother is born for the time of stress.
-- Proverbs 17:17
As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another
.--Proverbs 27:17

Be sure 2 read Coz and Rob's account of the weekend below!

RockStar Band Camp-Robby's Blog

RockStar Band camp

So going into the 3 dates with the Fundamental Elements (FE), I really didn’t know what to expect. I knew these guys were good people and excellent musicians. We first met them about 3 years ago when we played a NYE show in St. Louis. Fast forward to this past weekend...........INCREDIBLE. There are times when you are in a band and you need some positive energy and motivation. Watching FE do their thing was just what the doctor ordered. Playing with these guys was a treat, but I really enjoyed the behind the scenes stuff we( DWB) encountered. Getting to know these guys, talking about real life, impromptu jamming in their home studio, and encountering their positive energy has left a smile on my face. Here’s some highlights:
1) We came close to hitting not one, but two deer in our van packed full of 10 people
2) We realized that Cozmo is a Grown a#$ man who likes to dress like Ben Wallace
3) On Halloween, we learned Ghostbusters in a very short time and rocked it that night on stage
4) Frontman Russ from FE loves Montell Jordan’s This is How we do it
5) Robalicious dressed up as Leonardo ( yes the blue Mutant Ninja Turtle)
6) Cozmo says he has skills like a Ninja, but forgot his stage clothes for 3 straight gigs
7) Davis can cook some mean scrambled eggs for breakfast
8) FE Bass player Mark dressed up on Halloween .............................as Cozmo!
9) Jerry Reed from Smokey and the Bandit invented Country Funk
10) Mark from FE loves vanilla moon pies...............but only when Davis is serving them
11) FE drummer is in love with Keith Urban...................and once considered frosted tips
12) Diva can sleep with one eye open
13 ) Joe and Dustin came up with the best gynecologist name ever, but I can’t repeat it:)
But I think I can sum up it best when for the 2nd consecutive gig DWB and FE ended the night with Ghostbusters. The crowds went nuts and I think we rocked it harder than Ray Parker Jr. ever could. Imagine, 2 lead singers, 2 bass players, 2 guitarists, a rockin’ Diva, a ghoulish keyboardist, and a Indiana Jones lookin’ drummer. FE Drummer Luke told the truest statement right after we rocked every face in the club.........................THAT JUST HAPPENED!!!

Coz's Tour Highlights

So we just finished a three day Columbia, Burlington, St. Louis run for Halloween that was one of the most refreshing mini tours we have done up to this point in our lives. We played with our friends from St. Louis called the Fundamental Elements who are way fonky as well really cool dudes. To kick off the trip i realize about 8 hrs up the road that I forgot my clothes so Russ, from the Fundamental Elements, was so kind as to give me his Ben Wallace startup kit to wear for the weekend as I did for two of the shows. I never imagined how comfortable it feels to dress like Ben Wallace. For those who haven’t seen an FE and DWB show we usually do a big collaboration where both bands get on stage and perform a couple of tunes. Before the show on Thursday night a couple of members from DWB as well as FE approach me to give me the good news that we were gonna work up a version of Ghost Busters for our Halloween show. Yes I just said that, Ghostbusters. So we get up Saturday and chill for a little bit at Luke and Mark’s (drummer and bass player from FE) parents where we spent the night. By the way I believe I should side track just to talk a little bit about how we almost died on the way from Columbia to Burlington. We decided it would be easier to drive three hours to Burlington after the Columbia show on Thursday so we could chill on Friday and work up the Ghostbusters theme song. As we are driving through the night we constantly keep seeing deer wondering around on the side of the interstate. I didn’t have a good feeling about that. Eventually we enter the last leg of the trip and you can imagine how exhausted we were. At this point Mark DeJaynes (Bass player for FE) has taken the last shift to drive and I’m in the copilot seat where I usually am. We were spacing out talking bout something that was probably mindless then all of a sudden a huge deer appears on the road in front of us and we were driving at a steady pace of 70 mph. I was like hear we go boys we re about to eat venison all weekend, but we missed that thing by an inch. Kudos on the trailer breaks Davis, which if he hadn’t decided to put them on the day before we left it would’ve been over for all of us. We continued our conversation about loose meat sandwiches with cheese whiz because we were too tired to wrap our minds around the fact that we almost ran over a massive gorilla deer. Yes it was part gorilla part deer and it was flipping us off as it was running across the interstate. Wait a minute, I think I just blacked out. Back to the blog. After we ate some breakfast we go check out the DeJaynes’ home studio which was off the chain. We set up and jammed for a little bit then we (DWB and FE) started to work up this Ghostbusters collaboration. IT WAS NAAAASTY!!!! After we got done with that we went inside to eat about 10 pounds of chili and head to the Halloween show. It went over so well that we decided to play it the next night in St. Louis which was also a great idea. People were freakin out cuz how many times have you seen a band that breaks out Ghostbusters. I had so much fun I wore my Halloween costume at that show as well. Or wait a minute, I think I wore my costume cuz that’s all I had to wear all weekend. Thanks for loaning me some clothes Russ. What does a big brother do? He protects, harasses, corrects, punches, loves, and gives his sibling the hardest time ever when they mess up. Prime case example. Cozmo has been a guitar player in our band for about 3 years. We dig sports, funky music, and funny stories. Over these years I feel like an older brother to him. When we recently stayed at a friends house after a gig in Johnson City, Coz and I played Wii baseball..........and there’s video to prove it.

I am really glad I don’t keep up with all of the latest video games. Between being newly married, the band and work, I don’t have a lot of time for video games. Coz had played the Wii system before and told me how easy it was. I agreed and he asked me, “What do we play?” Since I dig the mano y mano challenge, I went with baseball. Now mind you, I’ve NEVER touched the Wii before this day. We decide to keep it interesting and make our players look like ourselves. He went with the fro and glasses and I went with the basic white guy, brown hair, blue eyes look. I looked like an extra on Silver Spoons for those who can remember.

Coz showed me how to pitch and how to swing. He then proceeded to tell me how I better not mess with him as he is quite good at this game. So after a few swings and pitches, I get the gist of it. Coz did crank a home run pretty early in the competition and boy did I hear about it. So it took me a little while, but I picked up on hitting. It ended up that I BEAT Coz the 1st game, 3 to 2. I was loving it. He was shocked. Coz was a little under the weather with a head cold, but he refused to believe that I beat him. Therefore.................can you say REMATCH!

So I’m feeling pretty good about now, but the 2nd game is a little more intense. A lot more trash talking. We had 3 and out in the first couple of innings. So Coz keeps running his mouth about how I am going down. I was telling him it was hard to hear him up here in Winnerville. So it comes down to I have 2 men in scoring position in the bottom of the last inning. Coz gets creative on his pitches and I am in a 3 balls to 2 strike count. This means that the game is one pitch away from being over. So I expect him to throw the fastball..........I waited, waited, and............................BLASTED A 3 RUN SHOT!!! I was a little out of character but I talked so much smack that you would have thought I was related to Muhammad Ali. I took the video camera and captured the moment............or should I say moments??

To sum up:

Robalicious ( Winner) 2 games to ZERO
Cozfro ( 2 time loser ) I think he ran to his mama’s

To See More visit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtD22Gnw0z4

Musician Tips:

If you take nothing else from me, take this: Use ear protection. I unfortunately didn’t start using it until a couple of years ago. Because of this, I now have that high pitched ring all the time in my ears. I now use Hearos. They are really cheap, but they are so nice when you take them out and can actually hear people talk the next day.

Until next time.........Peace and Chicken Grease,

Wouldn't it be nice? by Black Ice

As musicians we probably don’t think about this. Maybe we don’t have occasion to. Most of us are probably too busy focusing on our “own thing” – too busy trying to build something – too busy just trying to make a living. But wouldn’t it be nice if as musicians we could over come our tunnel vision, our single mindedness, our egos, our concern for the “show”, our longing to be “rock stars”, our images, our longings to be seen, to be heard, to be discovered, to be respected by those that don’t matter or only want a “piece” of us.

What if we stopped trying to “make it” and just shared with each other - just had fun together? What if we could be musically inclusive? What if we could foster an atmosphere of community that helped and encouraged each other as musicians? What would happen if we stopped worrying about our share of the gate? What would it be like if we could eliminate the sense of competition among us? What if we could bring the intellectual, classically trained music snobs and the untrained “music from the balls” musicians together? What if we stopped trying to be profound? What would happen if we stopped comparing ourselves to someone else, to each other locally, nationally, publicly, especially inwardly, or otherwise? What would it be like if we conquered our need to be needed? What if we stopped trying to be accepted, stopped trying to emulate, stopped trying to simulate? What if we could be comfortable just being ourselves – no masks?

After all, isn’t music about finding that common ground, sharing a part of yourself, giving a part of yourself, making yourself vulnerable, exposing a portion of your soul, being honest with the music-ones self and others, being transparent, evoking emotions, being free from pretense, etc.?

Not trying to be deep or philosophical. This is just a dream that I have. Wouldn’t it be nice?

Coz and Kevin Bacon

So I guess it’s my turn to blog so hold on to yo butts. Anyway, I’ve been sick the last few days so I decided ta take a shot and a half of the quill (Nyquil that is) and write a bunch of random thoughts that I can remember from the last couple of weeks so here it goes.
Robby touched on this in his last blog but I’m gonna elaborate about the Milligan college show. To start it off, the conditions for traveling were not too great considering that our oil refineries were getting pounded by hurricane ike so therefore everyone in America stocks up on gas making the gas prices raise to 5 dollars a gallon. Awesome right?!! Well, the show must go on so we head up to Elizabethton/Mayberry Tennessee to a little place called Milligan College. The campus was small and very clean and neat. Everything looked uniform as far as the landscaping and building décor goes which is usually how the vibe is on a small private campus. Anyway, we pull up to the building that we are performing in and find out that its about as big as a decent size living room and has couches set up everywhere. Uuuuhhh, this tells me they have never heard DWB considering our gear alone filled up half of the room. As I was meeting some of the folks there it gave me the vibe of the movie footloose starring Kevin Bacon. Do you remember that town that banned dancing? So I think you know where I’m goin with this ladies and gentlemen. This place was used to having one dude with an acoustic guitar and they’re about ta get there faces blown off. As it got closer to showtime I examine the room a little more. They pretty much make it a coffee house vibe. The tables were covered with sheets of brown construction paper and lit candles. Crayons were also given out so while people were chillin they could melt the crayons and draw on the table. I guess that’s pretty cool for a time killer. So now its time to go up so we get the not so big introduction followed by the softest golf claps ever heard. It’s getting better and better by the minute. I wish I had a camera for when we hit the first note. It was as if we were from another planet. Eyes got huge, people were whispering to each other, and there were confused looks on most their faces as if they weren’t allowed to like this kind of music. There were maybe 10 people that were diggin it off the get go though. Slowly but surely people are starting to loosen up and move a little except for these three people that sat at the very front and colored the whole time. I said it was good for a time killer, not to do while someone is 3 feet in front of you performing. They didn’t clap; they didn’t even look at us hardly. At first I thought they might have been def, but they were definitely talking to each other. Anyway, you all are lucky you left when you did cuz I wuz gonna call you up on stage so next time watch out. So back to the show, about 4 or 5 songs into it we finally got em as much as we were gonna get em. If anyone has seen dishwater you will notice that we really feed off the crowd so these signs of life were reviving for us. People are starting to get up and dance so now we’ve won them over. There were two girls that sat at the other front table that were into the show the whole time. One of the girls wuz in a wheel chair, but that didn’t stop her from dancing, noooooo. While she was really getting into it that made us get into it and Davis really got into it so he got into so much that he decided he was going to jump off the stage then up on top of a chair which was on a slick floor that caused the chair to slide out from under him and launch right into the girls lap. YEEESS!! Right when we are winning them over Davis decides it’s a good idea to launch a heavy metal chair at one of our biggest fans there, the girl in the wheelchair. Anyway, it turned out to be an awesome move she just ran with it like she was born to rock and we thank her for her cooperation. We tend to get outta hand sometimes. So you remember when I told you it was a “Footloose” situation, well it was. We were like Kevin Bacon saving the small town from being fonkless zombies, so thank you Kevin Bacon for inspiring us to dance.

The Robalicious Groove

Gig Talk
So normally the day of the gig is usually CRAZY. The average person has no clue what kind of chaos we go thru as a band to show up on time and play the gig. Life throws monkey wrenches our way and it is enough to get you totally frustrated.................but our love for music always prevails! The show must go on! If it was easy, we would probably lose interest and start other hobbies. Playing in this band is a blessing and let’s not lose focus on that. I’ll give you an example.
We played a show at Milligan college this past weekend. So at the last minute, we touch base with all of the band members trying to figure out where to meet, who hasn’t eaten yet, packing all of the gear, and let’s not forget getting gas. Davis drives from here to Kingdom Come, but fills her up for our journey. We are behind schedule with the Friday traffic, but our Milligan college contact says she understands and hope to see you soon. So we finally get there, get unloaded, set up our gear, eat, and head to our executive changing quarters ( men’s bathroom) for our stage apparel. You would love to be a fly on the wall as you are a normal guy, going to the bathroom, and you walk in to 4 guys changing into pimp suits. We always get the funny look. So as I unzip my suit bag, I notice that I have the essentials.........coat, tie, shirt, undershirt, shoes, black socks, and what the freak.................I have NO pants!
Now usually this isn’t a huge deal, but the guy in the band who forgets his stage attire gets the #1 spot of getting made fun of............oh for about a month. I take pride in being a seasoned DWB band member who comes prepared to a gig. Now I am the poster boy for Tacky Day USA. I have some casual gray pants that might work.............if you have grandma’s vision. But the show must go on! So I made the outfit the best I could and looked like the love child of Tommy Hilfiger meets Amy Whinehouse on a rough weekend. We shall see if I learn anything in future gigs.

Musician Tips
I recently played with several good musicians between the Fundamental Elements and my friend Bucco at his wedding with his band the Big Deuce. Both of these bands have great musicians and fantastic bass players. So we pulled them up there to jam with us....2 basses going at the same time. The FE bass player Mark is a cool guy that make you want to smack yo mamma during his bass solo. Emily, my now wife, leans over to me and says, " Can you do that?" I say.........Ahhhhh no. She then leans back over and says, "You should learn how to do that". I totally agree with her. But that’s Mark. Note to self...............ask Mark how to wow the crowd.
My friend Bucco is a funky ,funky dude. He attacks the bass like Flea from the Chili Peppers. He plays some way cool stuff. Now on these separate gigs, I had a choice to come out like a gunslinger and challenge these guys to a bass duel (which might bore people) or I could try hold the booty shakin’ grove ,keep the entire club dancing and let our friends shine. I chose the latter. It would have been fun to battle, but I wanted to be tasteful. I know my strength is finding a pocket or groove and setting up a camper That way you can be the cake and everyone else is the icing. Have you ever eaten too much icing by itself? I just try to be that cold glass of milk you are thirsty for. So I sat in my groove, let them add what they do and it just jammed. You have to a have a constant if everyone else is playing their best licks at the same time. On each of those gigs I had both of these bass players come up to me and complimented me on playing with them. It wasn’t anything extra special that I did, but I paid attention to what THEY were doing and tried to compliment them. I just listened. If you are more interested in what you neighbor is playing, you will be a better player.
Until next time.......
Peace and Chicken Grease,
Robalicious

September Updates

September Updates:

"DaDiYa..say do u remember..Dadiya..Dancin' in September??"--EWF

A few new updates in the world of DWB 2 keep ya up on!

1.)We have a new website..several of them actually but our friend Matthew Reynolds has designed a slammin' new website for us. It's being updated daily so check out http://www.dishwaterblonde.net and give us some feedback!

2.)Saxaphonist Bob Maxon has relocated to Alaska and as much as we hate to lose him we are truly excited for the new beginning in his life. Bob we love U and your sexy sax licks will be forever remembered in the DWB hall of fame..not 2 mention those tight dance steps!

3.)We had a great gig-filled weekend this past weekend. Friday night we played with our friends from St. Louis, The Fundamental Elements and it was one funky evening. Thanks 2 all our friends from VFC/ Cornerstone and BDBC who made that night extra special! There is rumored to be some footage of Cozmo wearing out the cowbell as DWB and FE as well as members of The Dirty Guv'nahs jammed into the a.m. We'll keep u posted as that footage surfaces. Saturday night was equally as fun as we were honored to play the wedding of Adam and Amanda Bucco. There were so many musicians there that we couldn't help but turn it into one big jam session! Special guests included Brandy Robinson, Daniel Lancaster, Jon Worley and his Cornbread Blues Band as well as one heck of an encore performance from the one and only "Big Deuce". They rocked the mic hard.. DWB members were in the audience dancin' their booties off...so much so that Davis split his pants and had 2 take a break and change....now that's what I call a party..it ain't a party 'til U dance and split yo pants..U can quote me on that!

4.)Robby got married. He and Mrs. Robalicious are now working on "happily ever-after!" We're just glad he made it back from Jamaica with the hurricane and what not.:) Robby's wedding reception was yet another one for the history books. Jam packed with guest musicians from some of Robby's former bands, Static Huey, GL and the Debits and New Power Soul...of course DWB performed some DWB classics with the groom on bass. After a couple of songs Robby recruited New Power Trio bassist Tyler "Big Noise" Boldin to sit in and finish the set. Tyler did a bang up job save for one slight mishap...The rest of the band was in Bb and Tyler played the whole song in B:( For future reference Big Noise "What U Got?" is in Bb....HA, we love u Big Noise thanks for filling in for Robalicious. We'll all try 2 make it out 2 a New Power Trio gig soon. There
are no words that I can think of to console the families affected by this tragedy.
Just know we will be praying for you and know that God WILL work ALL things together for good(Romans 8:28)

We've been working really had 2 finish up the "DWB Unplugged" CD and DVD set recorded May 10 at the World Grotto. We've put the finishing touches on this week and it looks and sounds incredible. Our friends at Streamline Pictures have done an amazing job making us look good, once again. I'll post a video in the next day or two so u can see!

August is here and it is HOT. This month we're excited 2 announce that
Robby aka Romeo aka Robalicious will be getting married. We wish u Emily
years of happiness 2getha. Word on the street is that their wedding reception will be a monster jam session with a special musical reunion of Robby's 1st band called "Regal Begal."

Still working on new material. Feels like a different direction than past DWB ventures but we will post some new demos as we develop the songs.

We'll be overhauling all of our websites and expanding...so bare with us this month as we'll be beginning new blogs, uploading new pictures and videos. Come and check us out on Facebook and add us a friend!

We're constantly looking for new towns and new places 2 come and play. If u have any connections with clubs, churches or wherever please send us an email. U will be handsomely rewarded!

Lastly, we need your help. the hardest thing we have to do is explain what we sound like to people. If u have a minute and have what U feel to be a good description of our sound please shoot us an email with a short description. Don't worry if we use yours you will be credited!

Until Next time remember this:

Psalm 20:7
Some trust in chariots and some trust in horses but we trust in the name of
The Lord Our God.

Peace
DWB
